Other Events Supported by the ATAA

back to About the ATAA

The ATAA are supporters of the following games for our youth:

Alberta Winter Games (usually in February every 2nd year - even years): The ATAA works together with the province and host committee in organizing this event. We send 8 archers from 8 zones to the games. There are two age groups: 12-15 and 16-17. Both recurve and compound and of course both male and females archers attend in all equipment and age categories. The ATAA supports this by developing coaches in each of the zones and having co-ordinators in each zone to try and contact as many of the juniors as possible to attend zone playoffs. The coach of the team is to have a minimum of level 1 coaching from the NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program).

The event consists of 3 rounds of 300 shoot to determine their placing in the Olympic Round, which determines the final winners of gold, silver and bronze. This is an amazing event as each archer learns incredible amounts of information about themselves and develops a network of friends through out the province.

Canada Winter Games: A bit of history, archery was originally in Canada Summer Games but due to marketing, popularity of other sports and politics, it was dropped. The Canada Games are supposed to be a stepping stone for athletes to the national and international level of competition. The Federation of Canadian Archers has been lobbying the government to get archery back in as archery is a summer Olympic sport. However, they have not recognized this but have included archery as an event in the Winter Games.

The ATAA supports this by trying to get the youth (21 and under) both male and female shooting either recurve or compound interested in going. We hold provincial shooting clinics and try to develop the coaching in areas either through these shooting clinics or coaching clinics set up by clubs or areas of the province to help the archers. The team is decided on based on an average of scores shot at predetermined shoots plus the overall attitude of the archer. Manager and Coach are selected by the ATAA through resumes sent in by interested candidates. The Coach must have a level 3 coach certificate. The ATAA budgets money to try and offset most of the cost having these clinics, usually a nominal fee is charged.

Western Canada Summer Games: The game format consists of shooting 1 FITA (1440) over 2 days with an Olympic Match Play Round used determine the placing.
